ABOUT US

Situated on the hillside of Monte da Senhora da Pena and overlooking the valley of river Coura, the Casinha de Mozelos is the result of the reconstruction of a small rural stone house, typical of Alto-Minho. The house is implanted in a one hectare property that spreads out through several terraces. The reconstruction privileged the traditional architecture, including the wooden ceiling in the living room, a beautiful wood burning stove, interior white walls and the floor in Portuguese slate.

Outside a granite patio and a wooden deck serve as a viewpoint and lounge space with access to several gardens. The tranquil beauty of the gardens and the expansive views over the surrounding green nature make this place ideal for a quick weekend getaway or relaxing vacations.

There is also a biological swimming pool/pond where the waters are treated naturally (with no chemicals) and where you can enjoy swimming with a couple of frogs and water plants.

WHAT TO DO

Natural Beauty

The main attraction of Paredes de Coura is its natural beauty where the protected landscape of Paisagem Protegida do Corno do Bico stands out as a feature with its Centre of Education and Environmental Interpretation (Centro de Educação e Interpretação Ambiental -CEIA).

Along the Coura river there can be found numerous beaches and waterfalls, the Tabuão river beach close to the town of Paredes de Coura is a beautiful example at any time of the year.

History

Paredes de Coura is a very rich council in terms of archaelogy; you can visit dolmens, castros and mamoas, walk along a roman road and bridge and see ancient milestones.
This roman road, along with the Romanic Church of  Rubiães (Igreja Românica de Rubiães), is part of the Santiago's way (the caminho).

The people of Coura, the Courenses, are strongly connected to their land and that connection is represented by the "Eira Comunitária de Porreiras" still in use.

To grind the corn there are over eight hundred watermills, many of those still in use up to this day, particularly in Casaldate and Porreiras.

Walks

To enjoy all the natural beauty that the council of Paredes de Coura has to offer, you can go on many different walks and trails, wether on foot, on a horse, by bycicle or even in 4x4 vehicles.

There are also a number of marked walking trails that will certainly stay in the memory of all nature lovers who explore them.

Culture

Baroque chappels and churches are part of the local landscape, there are more than one hundred that can be visited. The rococo church of EcceHomo (Capela do EcceHomo), in the neighbouring village of Padornelo, is an outstanding example.
In the town of Paredes de Coura, you can visit the Church of the Holy Spirit (Igreja do Espírito Santo), the Cultural Centre, with its diverse and permanent activity, the Regional Museum, the Archive and the Public Library, you can also do some shopping in the Rural Store (Loja Rural) and get information in the Tourism Centre (Posto de Turismo).

Paredes de Coura Music Festival

On the month of August, since 1993, the most important rock festival on the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula takes place.

Set on the natural amphitheatre of  the Tabuão river beach, the Vodafone Paredes de Coura Music Festival is a place where thousands of people from all over the world celebrate music for a whole week.

Food and Wine

The Alto-Minho region is very rich when it comes to food and wine.

In this area, you can taste dishes like the Portuguese Stew (Cozido à Portuguesa), Sarrabulho (a sort of soup made with blood), the Roasted Lamb (Cabrito Assado), the Coura River Trout (Truta do Rio Coura) and drink Alvarinho Wine (Vinho Alvarinho).

On most restaurants in the town of Paredes de Coura vegetarian dishes can be found.

GUEST REVIEWS

The cottage is supper nice, pleasant and cozy. For us it mainly served as a starting point for the numerous spectacular hikes around the area. We leave knowing we will surely come again. Thank you so much for the warm welcoming!
